As did Nietzsche, I have become suspect of Democracy; its empowerment by the voting of people who do not understand issues at hand and who may just seek to feather their beds with their vote. Perhaps Tytler addressed my concerns best: "“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.” We seem to be on the precipice of bondage?

From 1:40:00 on... His CONCLUSIONS are more STATED than PROVED. Opinions stand as facts. Just ask yourself after each statement:" Is that so, or is that his OPTIMISTIC view of it?? toil for toil's, sake... we NEED obstacles...it never occurred to Schopenhauer (really?)... he could not see the... ... etc etc... As I said, most of these CONCLUSIONS are rather stated than proved... and with Durant's stance in the intellectual world, plus his gravitas, as with other intellectuals... people just accept and not question. If he "finds in marriage and women and children the greatest of evils" (is that true?? he never said that, he stated facts, and if facts offend you you need to change the facts not attack the find finder, no??)... but why would you expect a great man like him to be like the majority, "Where a healthy man find its greatest of LIFE"S satisfactions", but this also doesn't make false what he stood for or said, EVEN IF the majority is needed for this process of perpetuation of the species. Would he have achieved what he did if he were concerned with supporting a wife and children?? For marriage and kids, and thus your unconscious "decision" to tie yourself and enslave yourself to THAT system for the rest of your life, REQUIRES a person to COMPLETELY IGNORE all the real daily life facts of that situation, that what romanic love does. Animals have no choice but their notices, humans have the still have the instincts but have choice IF THEY THINK, most just follow what their ancestors, parents and grandparents and social pressures demand, without thinking; for as soon as any man become FULLY AWARE of the facts of that situation and how it happens, by what processes it happens, no same man would agree to take such step. And we see it now more ordinarily, but it was still true THEN. In fact Schopenhauer was BRAVER to be like that in a world where it was socially way more pressure to be married and kids. How many GREAT men has this institution destroyed and stopped their creations from becoming reality!! How can any man give us these gifts if he has to be concerned by his daily wife's and kids' demands, and big distractions. Men have the instinct to MATE, but the rest is completely artificial. He was NOT wrong, even if Durant here takes that angle for the masses of his listeners, which are already a preselected group.

@@planksip I'll give it a try, I do see a few misspelled words, and maybe some added clarifying words would help... ill do it tomorrow. I tell you here now, that Durant STATES his feelings about it at that timestamp, but feelings are not facts, that is how he sees it... that is why I said that his views HERE, at that timestamp, are more STATEMENTS than facts, if you ask yourself after each statement "is that true, is that so??" More STATED, then PROVED. His statements are not proof. But ONLY from that timestamp where he gives us his CONCLUSIONS of it all. All the rest, PRIOR, is actually pretty excellent.
